Organization: Aphasia Centre of Ottawa
Description of Services: Community-based agency dedicated to the long-term support of people affected by aphasia * supports people who have aphasia due to sudden onset (i.e., stroke) or a gradual onset (i.e. Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA))

Speech-language pathologists (SLP), social workers (MSW) and communicative disorders assistants (CDA) provide programs to help people adjust to living with aphasia and to be active participants in the community

Services:
  • Virtual Communication and Counselling Groups: Speech-language staff facilitate conversations in small groups of people who have aphasia * The primary focus of these groups is communication - the sharing and exchange of ideas by whatever means e.g. speech, gesture, drawing, facial expression and body language
  • Individual Speech-Language Therapy (Virtual or in person): Individual therapy is often directed at enabling the person with aphasia to meet specific speech-language therapy goals * Initial assessment provided by SLP * Therapy provided by SLP or (CDA)
  • Caregiver Support Groups (Primary Progressive Aphasia-PPA only Virtual): Spouses and family members participate in monthly meetings facilitated by a social worker 
  • Workshops and Information Sessions (Virtual): Available upon request
Requirements
Fees: Set fees * sliding fee scale
Eligibility - Population(s) Served: Individuals 18 years and older with aphasia as a result of stroke or other acquired brain injury or a person with primary progressive aphasia due to a neurodegenerative disease, and their families
Application: Referrals accepted by a speech-language pathologist, a social worker or other qualified health professional * Self referral also accepted by person with aphasia, family member or friend
